AnonymousOh ffs. I wish Skins fans would stop calling the girls on the programme “bitches” all the time just cos they’re not cute and perky 24-7 and actually have opinions/concerns/feelings or behave in ways which occasionally make you uncomfortable.
Just because a girl isn’t all sunshine and roses all the time doesn’t mean she’s a ~bitch. Anthea Stonem had just reason to be bitter with Michelle. It doesn’t make her a bitch just cos she chooses to express her displeasure. Just cos a woman has unfavourable opinions and expresses them clearly doesn’t make her a bitch. She was trying to protect her son from someone whom she didn’t believe would help him; who for all intents and purposes, abandoned him after his accident cos “it was difficult” for her, not even thinking about how difficult it was for anyone else (this was shown in 2x01 as well). Michelle thought she was the only one suffering and Anthea calls her out on this. How is this bitchy? She sees Michelle as flaky for her lack of presence during tough times, and probably blames Michelle a bit for the reason Tony was in the road in the first place (which isn’t right, but it’s not bitchy. Even if a person is wrong doesn’t necessitate ‘bitch’ tho usually it is applied to girls we don’t agree with). She doesn’t want Michelle to screw up any progress Tony’s made or hurt him. Personally, I think that scene is great (It’s one of the ones I spoke of in some depth in my 20 times posts).
And guess what, she was right. What did Michelle do not 2 minutes after being smarmy to Anthea? She flipped out on Tony and slapped him. And, as a note, I don’t think Michelle was being a “bitch” to Tony either cos just slapping the label of bitch on someone is insulting and shows a clear lack of insight about human nature and motivation behind what the behaviours and emotions of a character. Something I feel Skins fans generally lack, especially in relation to characters like Michelle. The number of times I see her labelled a “bitch” with zero logical thought is ridiculous. Same goes for Cassie S2, Sketch, Katie S3, Jenna Fitch, Naomi S4, Effy at points, Mini, Liv. And now Anthea.
Way to not get the point of these characters and their issues, fans. Instead, just cos they’re women, it’s easy to say “Oh, she’s just a bitch.”
Ms. Norbury: Well, I don’t know who wrote this book, but you all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it ok for guys to call you sluts and whores.
Now, add in the word “bitch” there too.
Fallible, flawed, emotional women are not necessarily bitches. Women who express displeasure at something are not necessarily bitches. Women who irritate you or you just don’t like are not necessarily bitches. And all the women on Skins have real depth to them. Just stop reducing such complex characters to such simplistic, generalised and degrading terms. It’s fine to use the word sometimes (and is sometimes actually appropriate), I’m just tired of the moment a Skins girl does something moderately unkind/confusing to us, she’s automatically a raging bitch.
And to answer your question, yes, I love Anthea. She’s possibly my fav Skins parent.
